Welcome to the Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation District Website
The Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation District was organized in 1948 by a referendum vote of county landowners according to and under the provisions of Indiana Soil Conservation Act of 1937.
The District was organized by a majority of farmers in Crawford County. They recognized the need to apply new and proven soil conservation practices to prevent erosion and conserve the soil, water, and related land resources. They visited various groups and organizations, such as County and District Farm Bureau, Veterans Agriculture classes and extension meetings to discuss the feasibility and chance of getting a district in Crawford County. A referendum voting was held in 1948 with 1,654 votes cast and 98.4% of these were in favor of forming a District.
The Crawford County Soil & Water Conservation District, a unit of local government, is a legal subdivision of State Government responsible under state law for leadership in the conservation and development of soil, water, and related resources in the county. It is an independent body formed under and subject only to the Indiana Soil & Water Conservation District Law. It is organized by farmers and governed by five local Supervisors – two appointed by the State Soil Conservation Committee and three elected by the farmers. The Supervisors meet 12 times a year and attend other meetings in and out of the county.
The District works with individuals, citizen groups, and local agencies to prevent resource problems, correct existing soil and water problems, and help plan county’s natural resources within resource capabilities. They analyze needs and develop a long range plan aimed at solving soil and water conservation problems.
